Installing Solar Cells In Your Home

Solar cells can be used to directly convert sunlight into electricity, making the home owners more energy independent. Most commonly, solar cells in homes are used through the installation of solar panels.

solar home

Solar panels can collect sunlight during the day and transform it into energy. The stored energy can be used to supply power to the home by heating water and producing electricity. Although installing the solar panels can be simple, but it can be physically demanding.

1. First of all, you need to purchase a solar panel mounting kit. Usually, kits contain the same types of materials, such as solar panels, mounts, hardware, an inverter, and a voltage gauge. You can purchase the kits at any home improvement store.

2. Using a stud finder, locate all the roof rafters. Make a straight line over the rafter locations using a chalk box. This will help you to make a nicely designed array of panels.

3. Pre-drill the solar panel mounts to make sure that the rafters do not break up while you are the installing them.

4. Using the stainless steel lag bolts included in the mounting kit, fasten the mounts to the roof.

5. Using 3/8″ stainless steel bolts and brackets included in the mounting kit, attach the solar panels to the mounts. Keep in mind that the bolt size may vary depending on the brand of solar panel.

6. Attach the panels to an inverter using an electrical tool.

New Concept Hybrid Vehicle That Utilizes Solar Energy

Kia has finally entered the world of green energy with the launch of one of its newest plug-in hybrid concept vehicles. The new car features a range of 746 miles, utilizing solar energy for some of its smaller functions.

kia solar car

The Kia Ray, which was debuted recently at the 2010 Chicago Auto Show, is said to be one of Kia Motors America’s first entry into hybrid vehicles that will open a new range of green technologies that will be designed to reduce its carbon footprint compared to more conventional vehicles.

Besides the new plug-in capabilities that can boost the 153-horsepower engine’s fuel economy to 202 miles-per-gallon, the car also carries solar cells that will be located in the vehicle’s glass on its roof.

When the car is parked, the cells on the roof will generate a small charge of solar energy, which will be enough to operate cooling fans to reduce the vehicle’s interior temperature.

Peter Schreyer, who is the chief design officer of Kia Motors Corporation said “It is important to imagine what people will want in the future from a green perspective early in the design process, because people want to reduce their carbon footprint without driving carbon copies”.

Moreover, to add to the car’s renewable energy capabilities, nano-laminate films and other cooling materials have been added on the vehicle’s windows, which have been designed to reduce heat in the interior, which in turn will reduce the use of air conditioning and the release of greenhouse gases.

What Are the Benefits of Solar Power?

Solar Power is gaining popularity, becoming a key source of energy, all over the world due to a number of benefits of using solar power. Solar power can be utilized using a PV system or simply through a solar pool cover, solar garden lights or as a solar oven.

benefits of solar

There are multiple benefits of a solar system, which may even persuade you to consider using solar power in the future.

1. Environment Friendly

Solar power is a clean source of energy that releases no pollution into the air, thus helping prevent global warming and all other sorts of pollution.

2. Renewable Energy

The sun is providing energy constant and will keep on doing so for a long period of time. This is an advantage over other energy sources like coal and nuclear power, which are depleting fast. Thus solar energy is a great source of renewable energy.

3. Electricity

Solar power has the capability to provide sufficient energy to power your own home and even the homes of your neighbors. If you use solar panels efficiently to collect enough power, the extra energy can be distributed through the power grid for others to use. Using a PV system, you will never have to pay for electricity again. A PV system is a solar panel that is set up on the roof of your home, making your electricity supply independent of any other grid.

4. Installation

The installation process for solar panels is simple and easy, because they attach right to your roof and do not take up any space in your home or yard.

5. Taxes

The federal government, as well as some state governments, have started to give several tax cuts for people who choose to install solar panels in their homes, thus encouraging their usage.

RV Solar Panels

You may not be aware of this, but if you own a RV, i.e. a recreational vehicle, then it may be possible to get a number of solar panel solutions that can help you out in time of need.

rv solar panels

One of the main benefits of installing RV solar panels is that they can produce electricity even in remote locations. So if you are stuck in some far off area, without any patrol or gas, then this might come in handy for you.

The cost of RV kits can range from around $400 to $1000, depending on the power output you require.

RV solar cells are available in a variety of packages, which include starter kits or RV solar array extensions for addition to a current RV solar electricity system. The most widespread way to attach RV panels is by fixing them to the roof. This can be done by using mounts which screw into your RV roof.

The disadvantage of this method can be that you will have to drill holes into your vehicle, which can be a very hard decision for many.

An alternative to roof mounted solar panels, is a mobile solar electricity kit, which is also available in the market.

But this method will require storage space in the car when you travel, and the time to fix it up at your destination. But this method is famous mainly because you do not have to drill holes into your RV, which means when you want to sell it, the value isn’t affected by the “do it yourself holes” in the roof.

Moreover, the mobile panels which can be attached to your vehicles roof, can be easily taken out of the storage space, and placed in your brand new RV, which eliminates the cost of purchasing new panels.

New Financing Schemes To Make Solar More Affordable

The general idea we all have about installing solar panels is that they are very expensive and due to that, unaffordable although they do offer long term benefits, but putting in $20,000 to $30,000 in cash upfront to install a solar system on the roof of your home is not an easy thing to do.

solar panels roof

However, the good news is that many Bay Area solar companies that include Akeena Solar, SolarCity, Sungevity and SunRun, are in the process of starting new business models through creative financing mechanisms to make rooftop solar more affordable.

Most of the local and state governments, including Washington, are willing to help. The White House is already busy promoting a new form of financing generically known as PACE, or Property Assessed Clean Energy, which allows private property owners to pay for renewable projects like solar and energy efficiency upgrades through an addition to their property tax bill.

SolarCity, a company based in Foster City, offers solar power system design, financing and installation. The company has become famous by being the first one to offer a “SolarLease” , i.e. solar for no money down.

This way, , consumers lease the solar system for 15 years, instead of buying it and pay SolarCity a monthly bill. In many parts of California, they save 10 to 15 percent a month on their combined electric and lease-payment bills. When the 15-year lease expires, homeowners are given the choice to upgrade the system, extend the lease or have the panels removed for free.

Currently, SolarCity has about 5,000 customers, out of which almost half chose to buy their system, but the rest have leased it.

SolarCity operates in Arizona, California, Colorado and Oregon.

Some of the other companies helping people to incorporate solar energy into their homes include:

1. Sungevity, based in Berkeley, offers solar services completely online. You can go to the company’s Web site, type in your address, and immediately see a satellite image of your roof.

Sungevity then measures the size and pitch of your roof, together with the direction and possible shade obstacles, giving the potential customers an idea about the expected price within 24 hours. This way, the company says it saves consumers time and money by bringing the sales process online. It is possible to get systems for as low as $7,000 after a federal tax credit and state rebate.

2. SunRun, a San Francisco based company, helps consumers to use solar energy for as low as a $1,000 installation fee. Bay Area consumers then do a solar power purchase agreement, or solar PPA, paying SunRun a fixed rate for the solar electricity, which is much less than their previous electric bill.

3. Lowe’s, the home improvement store, has also joined the movement to make solar more affordable. It has begun stocking solar panels from Los Gatos-based Akeena Solar, hoping that ambitious do-it-yourself users will make going solar a weekend project.

Sixteen states, including California, Colorado, Texas and New York, have passed legislation enabling these types of program, promoting the use of personal solar energy.

PACE programs are already up and running in certain cities including Berkeley, Palm Desert, Sonoma County and Boulder County in Colorado.

Several Bay Area counties, including Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, San Mateo, and Alameda, also have plans to issue PACE bonds and plan to launch programs next summer.

Solar Power Goes Underground

It has been reported that the scientists in Georgia and New Jersey are busy in devising ways to take off the solar panels from the roofs of homes and cars, and moving them into basements and walls.

fiber optic

This will enable the homeowners to decorate their rooftops however they want, as the new panels would continuously provide solar power while protecting the delicate photovoltaic cells.

Zhong Wang, a scientist at Georgia Tech said that this might be the world’s first 3-D solar panel system.

The scientists at Georgia Tech are aiming to capture sunlight by using fiber optics cable instead of the traditional solar panels. They will then turn it into electricity by using the optics cables, coated with zinc oxide.

Although the fiber optic cables would be installed on the roof of a house, car or any other structure, but only the very tip of the cables would be exposed to the outside environment.

Sunlight will enter the tip of the fiber and travel to the end. It will then be absorbed and turned into electrical energy along the way. Once the light reaches the end of the fiber, it will bounce back, giving the zinc oxide another chance to absorb any light missed during the first pass.

The fibers can be cut to any length depending on the needs of the user. A 10-centimeter (four-inch) fiber would conservatively generate about 0.5 volts.

In order to power a 10-watt light bulb, about 10,000 fibers, each about 10 centimeters (four inches) long would be required. Although it might sound like a lot of fibers, but it’s about the same size as a small handful of human hair.

However, the fibers aren’t very efficient. Currently, they are only able to convert about 3.3 percent of all the light that enters them into electricity. On other hand, the silicon-based solar cells can absorb 30 percent of light.

The scientists are hopeful that further work could get his number up to 8 percent.
