Function of Photovoltaic Cells

We have all seen calculators with solar cells, that enable the device to work without any batteries, and can be used for unlimited time period as long as there’s enough light.

PV cell

These solar cells that are present in calculators and many other devices are also called photovoltaic (PV) cells. As the name depicts, these cells have the capability of converting sunlight directly into electricity.

A group of cells can also be connected together electrically, fitted into a frame to form a solar panel. Moreover, these solar panels can be combined together to form larger solar arrays, similar to the ones operating at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada.

Photovoltaic cells are made up of special material called semiconductors such as silicon, which is currently used most commonly.

When light falls on to the cell, a certain amount of the light is absorbed by the semiconductor material. The energy of the absorbed light is then transferred to the semiconductor. The energy is used to loosen up the electrons, allowing them to flow freely, and thus create electricity.

PV cells also have one or more electric fields that force electrons freed by light absorption to flow in a certain direction making a current. Thus by inserting metal contacts on the top and bottom of the PV cell, we can direct the current for some external use. This current, combined together with the cell’s voltage due to the built-in electric fields, defines the power that the solar cell can produce.

This is the basic process through which photovoltaic cells work, but clearly there’s much more to it, which will be explained in the proceeding articles.

Solar Panels For Home

Solar panels are a great way to generate clean and renewable electricity, which can be used to supply power to remote areas or even the average home.

solar house 1

Currently there are two main forms of solar cells, known as the “solar electricity panels” and “solar hot water panels”. These two technologies are used either to generate electricity for our homes or to heat the water we use.

With the passage of time, new and more efficient solar panel designs are coming in the market, making the use of photovoltaic power much more viable to homeowners and businesses.

Solar Electricity Panels

Solar or photovoltaic cells are a great way of providing electricity to remote areas, where it is difficult to supply electricity through a grid. The best example of such power generation can be found on satellites. For several years, satellites have been using solar panels to catch the suns rays, in order to provide power to the equipment on board.

Photovoltaic cells can be aligned as an array, to provide maximum efficiency. There are many advantages of using a solar cell array, with various panels fitted along a mounting system. One of the biggest advantages is that various numbers of cells can be combined to provide greater output of electricity, making this method a viable option to power small homes and businesses.

The increasing efficiency of the new solar energy technologies have made it easier to purchase and install panels, making this an efficient way of harnessing energy from the suns rays to turn into electricity for use in our homes.

Although it is possible to generate enough electricity through solar panels to run a complete household, yet this is unlikely in most cases due to the costs involved. Thus solar power can be used in combination with some other supply to provide affordable energy solution.

Solar Hot Water Panels

Use of solar panels to heat water is becoming increasingly popular around the world due to the energy and money that can be saved using this method.

solar water heater

An efficient solar hot water panel system can provide an average household with about a third of its annual hot water supply. Although this may not seem as a lot, it can reduce energy costs by a considerable amount.

If you are able to combine a solar panel hot water heating system, together with an average solar electricity system, you could successfully save up on energy and electricity bills.

Why Is Solar Energy Important?

Solar energy is extremely important for us to survive. Besides helping us to stay warm, and enabling other organisms to survive, it is used in the commercial power production as well.

solar energ

Solar energy is also essential for plant life as it is necessary for photosynthesis, the process through which plants generate energy and process nutrients for their growth by converting solar light for their own use by utilizing chloroplasts within their leaves and bodies.

Through this process, food is produced for other herbivores together with oxygen for us to breath and removal of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, allowing creatures such as ourselves to survive while maintaining a balanced world temperature.

Hybrid solar lighting used for interior lighting is also a type of solar energy. This is most commonly used to give off light inside buildings. You will find that individual solar lights will marinate in the sun all day and stay lit at night to light up walkways and gardens.

A lot of people do not realize that solar energy is used for cooking. Solar power ovens as well as other kitchen appliances are becoming more and more popular. Something as simple as a greenhouse uses solar power. Power from the sun will help the plants to grow and thrive. Greenhouses also take in the rays of the sun to heat up the inside of the greenhouse. This is very beneficial to the plants during the winter time when they would normally die.

Many of us are unaware of the fact that solar energy is also responsible for generating wind currents, which help the spreading of spores and gametes in plants and fungi to allow their propagation over a wide area.

Herbivores or omnivores also require solar energy to gain energy, which help them to produce various B vitamins such as B-12 to energize and stimulate several processes.

Solar energy even affects our daily moods, as our bodies adapt and adjust throughout the different seasons as the amount of sunlight changes. For example, many people feel more depressed or less energetic in the winter or during rainy seasons, while the summer tends to see more positive feelings and productive work styles.

This is commonly known as “Seasonal Affective Disorder” and is common among not only people but many animals as well.

Solar energy is also partly responsible for the generation of oceanic waves and currents as well as regulating the salt/fresh water mix through the melting and re-freezing of the polar ice caps.

This supports a conducive living environment for ocean creatures as the oceanic currents circle and deposit shared nutrients across the globe. The melting of the ice by solar energy makes sure that new fresh water is made available for countless ecosystems around the world that are dependent upon this cycle for survival.

Lastly, the commercial use of solar energy has helped to provide an alternative, renewable power source through the usage of photovoltaic energy cells for harvesting direct energy from the sun’s rays as well as through harvesting wind and hydro power, both byproducts generated from solar energy.

Many people have utilized effective renewable energy in a number of different ways, helping to reduce energy consumption in many countries, thus providing a cleaner, safer environment for people to live in. This is especially important now as the oil reserves deplete increasingly each year, paving the way for alternative energy.

World’s Largest Solar Energy Project Planned For Africa Desert

A large solar energy project in the Sahara is underway, which will provide electricity to British homes.

world's largest solar plant

The Desertec Industrial Initiative (DII) group, that will provide a network of solar plants in north Africa harnessing the sun’s rays, will be the biggest in the world, leaving behind the current largest installation already running at Andasol in southern Spain.

It is hoped that the project will eventually provide 15% of Europe’s electricity by 2050, combined with other similar amounts of electricity for countries in the Middle East and North Africa.

According to figures, it is possible to meet the energy demands of the world, by covering as little as 1% of the world’s deserts.

Dr Gerry Wolff , Coordinator of DESERTEC-UK, which is a group of British investors in the project, said that the people of UK will start using the desert electricity produced in the Sahara within five years.

An important point that must be remembered is that the electricity will be for people throughout Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. If everyone is benefiting, the project will surely run smoothly.

The DII group hopes to begin building the huge solar plants within three years and delivering energy by 2015. Moreover, instead of using photovoltaic solar panels to absorb the sun’s blistering rays, the project plans to use hundreds of giant mirrors that will reflect the light and concentrate it at a focal point, such as a tower next to the field of mirrors.

Similar technology is already being employed at the PS10 and PS20 CSP plants near Seville in Spain.

7 Simple Ways To Utilize Solar Energy in a Pre-Existing Home

Power from the sun is an unlimited resource, and most importantly, it causes no harm to the environment, and is free. This has made homeowners to consider alternative ways to heat and power their homes, using this free source of energy.

solar power in house

The best thing about it is that it is not necessary that the home should be newly constructed to take advantage of the sun’s rays; pre-existing homes can utilize solar power, as well. Here is how:

1. Make a plan of how much you are willing to spend in order to convert your pre-existing home to solar power. You should consider your financial resources and the maximum amount of money that you can afford, but do keep in mind that although the initial installation of equipment can be costly, but it will pay off big in the end.

2. Get a solar panel system for your home. Solar panels are easier to install as they can be placed on the roof of your home. They are made up of photovoltaic cells, which are silicone-based and trap the energy produced by the sun’s rays. This energy is then stored and consumed to power devices that would normally run on electricity.

3. Keeping your requirements in mind, you can also go for a solar powered hot water heater. This will help you save money on your fuel bill, and contribute towards keeping the environment clean as well as hot water heaters produce carbon monoxide in large amount.

4. Use solar powered lights in your house. Instead of using electricity wired spotlights outside, go for solar lights that collect energy throughout the daytime hours, and automatically turn on when it gets dark outside.

5. Use a Solar Air Collector to reduce heating costs in your house during the daytime hours. This will help you to lower your electricity bill during the cold winter months.

6. If you have a pool in your house, you can switch to a solar heating system, to keep your pool warmer throughout the swimming season, for free.

7. You can use solar home batteries instead of disposable ones to operate the small appliances in your home. Energized by the sun, these batteries will always be ready to go when you need them.

How Solar Panels are Prepared?

Solar panels preparation is a process that is carried out in delicate manner. This is the reason that most of the time the processes that are carried do not work for long time, till the time when enhancements were made and the semiconductors were made of better substances that gave life to solar panels. This changed the routine and the solar panels worked more efficiently also that they have turned affordable.flat plate solar panel

Solar Panels (Crystalline Silicon):

crystalline silicon solar panel These type of solar panels are made of thin, finely slices silicon disks that have thickness less then a centimeter. These thin defined disks are sensitive and treated with care, polished and cared from any damage through slicing process. After the disks are polished they are being added with the semi conductors.

The conductors are so well spread over the disks in a grid-matrix manner and so well spread on the top of the solar panel. Solar panels are protected from damage by bonding a thin layer of glass over it. After the glass sheet is spread it is then cemented with a substrate with a semi conductor expensive cement. This is beneficial as the cement makes the solar panel avoid from extra absorbing of solar heat, as above normal heat if absorbs looses the efficiency of the solar cells. As far the the making itself is done with care to prolong the life of solar cell, but still further steps should be taken when placing a solar panel in a place where it is airy and cool so that the device remains normal for longer time period.

Solar Panels (Amorphous Silicon):

amorphus silicon solar panel These type of solar panels are contrary to the crystalline solar panels. These solar panels have strong photovoltaic cells and work efficiently. Its structure, performance and lining is totally different solar panels. The process involved in making this kind of solar panels is roll to roll process by repeatedly vaporizing silicon alloys in multiple layers. The good point is that process carries ending in thin layers that helps in absorption of the solar heat. This results in total as great working efficiency and decreased materials prices. The Amorphous solar panels or the A-si solar panels are thinner than the silicon crystalline solar panels. The making of Amorphous silicon solar panels involves less risk of damaging and are less sensitive as compared to making of any other solar panels thus investing money in these photovoltaic cells are still feasible.
