Solar Panels For Home

Solar panels are a great way to generate clean and renewable electricity, which can be used to supply power to remote areas or even the average home.

solar house 1

Currently there are two main forms of solar cells, known as the “solar electricity panels” and “solar hot water panels”. These two technologies are used either to generate electricity for our homes or to heat the water we use.

With the passage of time, new and more efficient solar panel designs are coming in the market, making the use of photovoltaic power much more viable to homeowners and businesses.

Solar Electricity Panels

Solar or photovoltaic cells are a great way of providing electricity to remote areas, where it is difficult to supply electricity through a grid. The best example of such power generation can be found on satellites. For several years, satellites have been using solar panels to catch the suns rays, in order to provide power to the equipment on board.

Photovoltaic cells can be aligned as an array, to provide maximum efficiency. There are many advantages of using a solar cell array, with various panels fitted along a mounting system. One of the biggest advantages is that various numbers of cells can be combined to provide greater output of electricity, making this method a viable option to power small homes and businesses.

The increasing efficiency of the new solar energy technologies have made it easier to purchase and install panels, making this an efficient way of harnessing energy from the suns rays to turn into electricity for use in our homes.

Although it is possible to generate enough electricity through solar panels to run a complete household, yet this is unlikely in most cases due to the costs involved. Thus solar power can be used in combination with some other supply to provide affordable energy solution.

Solar Hot Water Panels

Use of solar panels to heat water is becoming increasingly popular around the world due to the energy and money that can be saved using this method.

solar water heater

An efficient solar hot water panel system can provide an average household with about a third of its annual hot water supply. Although this may not seem as a lot, it can reduce energy costs by a considerable amount.

If you are able to combine a solar panel hot water heating system, together with an average solar electricity system, you could successfully save up on energy and electricity bills.

How Coal is Transported and Processed

Coal is transported all around United States by train; according to figures almost 70% of coal in 2007 was transported around United States through railroad. Barges and trucks contribution for coal transportation is 11% while rest is delivered mainly by tramway, conveyor belt, or slurry pipeline.

How Coal is transported

Sometime coal is transported great distances. Such as, Powder River Basin coal is transported by rail to power plants as far away as Georgia. It travels a long way as far as the distance from Wyoming to Georgia.

To save the money from coal transportation costs there is a common way that using coal near the coal-mines. As soon as the coal is mined it’s delivered immediately to power plant through conveyor belt. Such plants are called “mine mouth” plants. The growing presence of mine mouth plants had eased by expanding use of long distance electricity transmission.

Before transportation of coal to a long distance it under goes a process of preparation to lower shipping costs and facilitate use in power plants. Crushing of coal and removing heavy, extraneous non-coal materials are included in coal preparation. If there is a sulfur contamination in the coal or any other impurity then it washed with a water or chemical, removing up to 40 percent of inorganic sulfur in the coal.

It’s not like that all type of coal is prepared in same way. Commonly Eastern coal is washed to meet environmental regulations, while low-sulfur Western coal typically is crushed and resized without being washed.

Unfortunately there is a drawback of coal washing, because the contaminants and non-coal material removed during washing have to go somewhere, so normally that results into large waste reservoirs. In 2002, almost 25% of the raw coal going into washing plants were left behind as waste.

Geothermal Power Plants

Geothermal power plants use heat deep in the earth for the generation of steam, which in turn power generator for the generation of electricity. Geothermal heat pumps don’t generate electricity but these are used to transfer heat from the ground to reduce energy required to heat a building.

1

Working of Geothermal Power Plants

For the generation of electricity Geothermal power plants use much higher temperature deep within the earth, we can say that these power plants are much similar to coal or oil powered generators in which electricity is generated from steam driven turbines.

One of the main difference is that coal and oil powered plants burn fossil fuels to produce steam while the heat of the earth’s core is used by the geothermal power plants. Earth’s core is extremely hot and some areas are more suitable for the generation geothermal power from others depending upon that how far the surface of hot areas are located in the within the earth.

Places where high incidence of volcanoes occurs are much suitable for the production of geothermal energy. As we have heard about geysers, hot springs and volcanoes, these are the examples from in which the molten core comes close to the surface. From ancient times heat from hot springs has been used for the generation of geothermal energy.

There is a simple concept behind generation of geothermal power. To tap into a pressurized area of hot water and steam drill a hole deep into the earth and to drive a turbine for the generation of electricity we have to pipe the steam to the surface.

1

Direct Steam Plants

It is the oldest type of geothermal power plants, operates as I described above. Underground collection of hot water and steam are tapped and steam used to turn turbines. The concept of generating electricity form the heat of earth is not new, a direct steam powered generator is used by Prince Piero Conti of Italy to light a few light bulbs at the steam fields of Larderello and after seven years a commercial power plant was built at the same location.

There are few potential problems of Direct steam plants which are discussed below,

  • Steam which is used for the driving of turbines may carry small amounts of mineral, which can make steam to be very corrosive to the turbine, and due to this the possibility of releasing pollutant into the air also increases.
  • One other problem is that there are limited number of locations have the geological structure which is important for the feasibility of Direct steam plants.

Other type of plants that overcome some of the problems and are widely available have developed by the engineers. Possible pollution reducing because current plants recover the condensed steam and return it to earth.

Binary power plant is the newest system and geothermal fluid passes through heat exchanger in this system. In this exchanger, the transfer of earth’s heat to another fluid circulating in a closed system takes place and this fluid vaporizes to steam, drives the turbines and then condenses to liquid, after it the cycle starts again. These type of systems avoid turbine parts to the corrosive steam and eliminates pollution virtually. We can say that, Binary systems will probably be the most common in the future.

3

Present and Future of Geothermal Power Plants

Currently, there are 24 countries in the world which have geothermal generating plants, others are more likely to follow as the technology improves and the problems with oil become more apparent. The US has the highest absolute production and producing almost 3000 megawatts and this is very small according to the needs of the country. Many of the geothermal plants are in California and they only produce about 5% of the energy needed by the state. Second largest producer of geothermal energy is Philippines.

According to the estimation of Earth Policy Institute, there are at least 39 countries that meets their electric needs with the production of geothermal and many more can use geothermal as part of their energy mix. It can be concluded that Geothermal power plants are a cost effective source of electric power that are likely to become more common in the future.

Solar Energy Costs

We have measurement scales for every element. For example, if we have to buy milk, we have measuring scale called liter, if we want to buy sugar, we have measuring scale kilogram. But the question arises that what will be an appropriate measure of a solar panel?

solar energy cells

Now we are interested in the amount of electricity a panel produces. However, panels output depends upon the amount of light strike it. Through this method a panel is classified according to the electricity produced under these condition. The measurement is expressed as watts peak (Wp).

In order to get cost per watts peak, we have to divide cost of the panel by its power output. So the cost per watt peak is only one factor in determining the total cost of a photovoltaic system.

The Process

Under standardized conditions, the testing of panel is done. There is difference in panel’s production level depending upon the area in which it is installed. If its installed in a cloudy area, it will produce less electricity as compared to an area where the sunlight exposure is more prominent. Similarly, there are other factors which affect the production of electricity and these factors include climate, amount of shade on the panels etc.

Similarly, in order to get a required amount of electricity under given climate and installation situation, helps in determining that how many panels you will need. So in a home, different number of panels would be required as compared to a larger home where the requirement and usage of electricity is more.

The other factors which affect solar energy costs include the expense of panel but it is only 40% of all the costs. Other expenses are mounts, wiring, inverters, batteries and above all the labor cost.

Now, if we talk about the payback time, that in what time the expenses will be recovered, is roughly 10 to 20 years. But it varies depending upon the condition like if the energy costs go up, the payback time will be less. So solar energy costs can be recovered and its a helpful alternative of energy.
